MAF sensor trouble

Got a code from AutoZone saying MAF sensor was problem. Engine runs, but very choppy esp. at low RPM and in turns, plus mileage is down about 2 mpg. Tried MAF cleaner, then Got part from AutoZone on 2nd try, but no fix. Called mechanic to schedule appt, and he said Nissans were finicky about replacements and AutoZone part almost certainly wouldn't work. When removing the MAF to return, discovered two holes in the intake home that connects the air cleaner to the air intake. Forum here says MAF code often covers other issues. 2 questions:
1) could the holes be what triggered the MAF code and, If so, Is a $20 aftermarket hose a viable option?
2) are there any aftermarket brands that actually work that I should try replacement, Or am I better off just letting the mechanic do it?

Don't mean to kick up old thread, but just sharing somewhere: had lots of trouble removing MAF sensor from my 2017 Rogue Sport SV. I chewed out the screw head threads w/Phillips, needing an extender. So I process of elimination I discovered that it takes a 9/32 socket to remove the two screws holding the MAF down.
Also, I used the correct MAF sensor cleaner. However, I was unable to remove the wiring harness beforehand. So I just cleaned the sensor with the harness still attached. Had to make sure underlying engine parts were covered. But net net- got improved starting, quieter idle, and smoother accelerations. Hoping for better MPGs.
