My 2001 pathfinder SES light came on in early September and I took it to the dealer for an oil change and to find out why the SES was on. Codes P1110 and P1135 are written on the service order and I was told that the only "fix" was a new engine because the engine was "slduged". I have mostly changed the oil on a 4,000 to 7,000 mile interval with two intervals outside of this. I currently have app 138,000 miles on it. Interestly enough, the car doesn't use more than one quart of oil between changes and I recently (last full tank consumed) got 21 mpg. The engine isn't particularly noisy (I don't hear lifter noises, etc.) so I am skeptical about the diagnosis.
I plan to take the car to another shop this week or next (I don't have to drive this car everyday and have only driven 100 miles on it since the diagnosis). What diagnostic tests should the shop do to confirm or eliminate the statement that this engine is "sludged". Based on the fairly regular oil changes and lack of symptoms, I'm having trouble accepting this diagnosis and want to have actual tests run to confirm.
