Catalytic Converter

Is it difficult to replace a catalytic converter at home? If it isn't too hard to remove from the vehicle, is it also possible to look at it visually to determine if it even needs replacing to begin with? I'm doing my best to fight the urge to hammer a bunch of screwdriver holes to make it breathe more...

Unrelated to above: Is it bad for the tranny to shift from drive into neutral while moving? What above from neutral to drive while moving?

Its pretty easy to change, but getting those @*&#% bolts out is damn near impossible sometimes. All those heating and cooling cycles really hold them in there. I suggest taking it to a shop unless you have an impact, breaker bar, and some new bolts (you'll probably break the old ones).

Shifting the tranny shouldn't hurt it. I do it all the time.
