Can I use Consult 3 with generic OBD adaptor ?

I have a laptop with COnsult III sotware loaded, but no interface hardware.

Can I use some generic OBDII interface ? I really would prefer this solution to buying the very expensive "Official" VI tool.

Thanks,

Dave
