A friend of mine bought a brand new 1998 BMW 7 series back in 1997. Ever since new, he put in cheap-o store brand motor oil. Today his car has 110,000 miles with no problems with the engine; it's also as quiet as other 7 series from that year. Why do expensive car companies require synthetic oil?

In my opinion, it's to fool the customer into thinking "everything expensive requires something expensive to maintain."

It's kind of like poor people who think if they had a chance to own a Corvette, it would be foolish not to put in the best motor oil just because the Corvette is worth over $40,000.
