Hey everyone. I have a question. The other day, a semi-quiet whining noise started coming from the back passenger corner of my '94 300ZX (83K miles). It only seems to sound when I would put my foot on the accelerator and is slowly getting louder.

Is this my fuel pump? The car is still driving, but does this mean its going to give out soon? Any info would be greatly appreciated!!

Lemee move this to Z32, the guys there might know. I know the fuel pump is rising progressive pressure, at least on the turbo cars. That might be it. If you never heard this sound before, it could mean one of any number of things. Might mean the fuel filter is clogging up, the pump is working harder to push fuel out, and so making more noise. Might possibly be getting ready to go out, too.

If it was your fuel pump the noise would becoming from the drivers rear. It sound like your differintal bushing is going out or your low on gear oil. Lift the rear of your car up and look at the diff. If it's leaking you will see oil dripping from the diff.

The Z32 master speaks. ;) And now that I think about it, could be a wheel bearing or axle shaft noise as well. No point in not checking all that out. :)

Wheel bearing? This should be relatively easy to diagnose as it should make one wheel much warmer than the other.

Also check for sticking brakes ... a stuck caliper. Car may also be sluggish, be down on mileage and you should smell burning brake pads.

I'm also voting for something in the rear end. At the very least, check the oil level and top off if needed.

If you rule everything out and your rear-end is showing signs of excess wear, you might want to try a really heavy oil like Red Line 75W-140 or one of their "Shockproof" oils.

Nothing replaces a properly rebuilt rear end but a premium gear oil can make the best of a bad situation ... maybe buy you a little peace and quiet.

Specialty Formulations also makes heavy-duty differential fluids in different weights:

Do a ecu diagnostics and see what codes come up. If you don't know how to do that go the 300zx forum and look for diagnostics on towards the top of the page.

The DS is a pain to get to and most people would relocated the sensor or by pass it. If you are really anu about it you'll have to remove the heads to get to it.
