I have a "gear reduction" type of starter in my sentra 92, 1.6, manual trans. Is it possible to use a "direct drive" or "planetary gear reduction" type in place of the original?

Yes, use a CA model starter, it is direct drive. The connectors are different though, but it can be modified to work, or get the trans/starter harness out of a CA car.
