Hi everyone, I just bought a green 98 200sx and its my ONLY car. I noticed today that the orange Service engine soon light is on. Is there any way to figure out whats causing this withOUT taking it to the shop?

Thanks

Weird

Well, actually something weird happened. I was chillin in my car at work, listening to the stereo and for some reason the light turned off. I let it idle for a little bit, turned it off and back on and the trouble light stayed off. Should I be worried about this, or count myself lucky and not worry about it? It seemed to run fine on the way home. -

If I were you, I would check the code anyway. I have a feeling its going to be your egr. Just use the link provided by me above(with pics), and pull the code ans let us know what it is.

well you have OBD2, it could be something simple like an oxygen sensor too. like they said, you can get the code yourself if you can get to the ECU. all you should need is a screwdriver. if it's easier, autozone should be able to plug in and tell you what code it's storing. I got an EGR code when I got my 94 sentra last year, but I was able to clean out the intake and everything and that cleared it up. those code scanners aren't 100% accurate because sometimes, one code can spawn another. a common example is a misfire can cause a lean condition, causing a false reading on your o2 sensor. you'd be throwing a misfire and an o2 sensor code. when was the last tune up?

and if it is an EGR flow code, there's a good chance that the valve itself is good, but it's just clogged with carbon. like I said, I was able to clean the intake with seafoam and intake cleaner, and clear that code up. but you may wanna try actually taking out the EGR valve and cleaning it and its port out with carb cleaner to get the carbon outta there. then clear the code and see what comes up.

If you pull the codes, and find one. then come back here and post it. Then we can help you. We cant do much, untill we really know whats wrong. It doesnt take that long to pull the codes. If you are that lazy, go to autozone and they will do it for FREE.
