I own a 2003 Pathfinder LE. To get to the point, I bought it brand new in 2003. When I turn the dial to 4wd (including the auto setting,) there was a faint whirring noise. Never having a 4wd vehicle before, I thought it was normal. There was no warning lights that indicated and error, nothing. Now fast forward to 2008, I brought my truck in for service and they mentioned the transfer case motor (where the whirring sound was coming from) should be changed. I told them that whirring sound was always there since I bought the truck, but only this time the warning light was on. 4wd engaged as normal. I got it replaced nonetheless. Has this happened to anyone out there? Have I been swindled? Opinions?

I've just had the transfer case noise start in my 2003 Pathfinder after 165,000 kilometers. Have not had it confirmed but I think it will be the transfer case motor. What warning light was on for this problem? There is nothing showing on my dash. Would you mind telling me what you paid to have yours replaced?

My noise was always there until I got the transfer motor case replaced, but after 5 years I never had an issue with 4wd. $800 later, I wish I never did cause I use 4wd 4 months out of a year. The warning light I had was for an exhaust leak, I only knew this because the code that always popped up. I hope this helps.
