I think you need a new speedo. There's a seal at the transmission end of the cable to keep the oil out of the speedo head. If you oiled the cable you probably have oil in the speedo? the speedo seems to work by using a magnet turning at the same rate as the cable, I think with a coil or something the magnet induces a voltage in the coil which turns the speedo needle, i may be wrong.
