The service engine soon light is on again for the 3rd time in my Nissan 2002 Pathfinder XE. Everytime I take the vehicle to the dealer, I get charged $100 for them to figure out the codes and what they mean. Is there a way I could figure out what the issue is and save the 100 bucks. I have 80K miles on the vehicle and the last time it got fixed for Oxygen sensors. The gas knob seems to be tight and in place. Thanks.

A simple OBDII code reader costs less than $100 and will tell you the specific codes. Or Autozone will read the codes for free for you (outside of CA). Troubleshooting charts for each code can be obtained from a yearly subscription to www.alldata.com for $24.95 or get a daily subscription to http://www.nissan-techinfo.com/nissan/ and download the factory service manual. And if you have trouble just get the codes with a reader and post here, you'll get plenty of help.

My 2001 Pathfinder had been pinging for 10000 miles (since I bought it a year ago with 75000 miles). Had engine light on a couple of times, which pointed towards O2 sensor. Never did replace it. So with poor fuel mileage, lack of performance, and a horrible engine ping upon acceleration, I finally had the fuel injection system serviced. The dealer called it a "Moto-Vac" (Decarbs and Flushes everything). The engine is disconnected form the fuel system, and runs for an hour or so on a special cleaner.
I immediately noticed better acceleration, and no more ping. Not sure about mileage yet...
