Serious Swap ?'s

Ok i have read most of the post about this but i was so confused after reading half of them i was wondering first of all what would be the best and most cost affective swap and what exactlly will i need from the other car :confused:

if you've got a GA16i, the most cost effective swap is definitely the GA16DE swap. it's the 1.6L 91-99 sentra engine. very similar blocks etc. and the transmission and motor mounts from your car can still be used if it's an 89-90. all you need is the engine, ecu, and wiring harness. you also need a throttle cable from the appropriate year you took the engine from, as the stock one simply just isn't long enough. essentially it's the GA16i's younger, beefier, 16valve twin cam, MPFI brother. use the 91-94 GA16DE, as the wiring is much simpler. it's a base 20hp more, with higher torque as well. also, while the GA16i takes GA16DE bolt-ons, they work much better on the GA16DE, and the DE is much more workable.

if it's an 87-88 with an e16i, i would assume the e15et block is the best choice. similar situation. i don't know much about the e16i to e15et change. essentially all i know is the e15et is a turbo charged 1.5L same family engine as your stock.

If you wanted a much beefier engine than either of these and you don't mind doing customization, a turbocharged JDM bluebird SR20DET is a good choice. you could go with a N/A b13 SE-R SR20DE as well. same engine. but you're going to need ECU, harness, transmission, and possibly other stuff. that information has been stickied. if it's not in this forum it's in one of the other subforums. you'll need to change the motor and transmission mounts for this one for sure.

yes its a 89 sentra 2 door coupe so the GA16DE would i need the transmission for that swap

good start. your stock transmission will bolt up, so you don't need the DE transmission. if you can do the work, you could rebuild your transmission. if not, and you have really high mileage on the car, a GA16DE with transmission will still cost you less than $1000.

ok now that i got that ? out of the way what cars and year models does the first genaration ga16de motor come in because i herd the second genaration dosent work so well and also i heard the wiring harnes would not matter beacuse i had a manual car i was told that even the automatic one would work for my car and i also understand that i need the throtel cable correct

yep, go with a a first gen one (less top end, more bottom end) because the wiring is 10 times easier. it'll be out of a b13 sentra (91-91). and you'll need the longblock, wiring harness, ECU, and throttle cable.

ok and does anyone know if there are any strut bars thats will fit without modification and btw sonic i am a fan of the mx6's to my father is actullay working on mine right now and it will be my daily while im working on the sentra

i was also wondering if anyone has a nice clean dash no cracks they would like to get rid of or sell me i need a new one mine has alot of cracks in it thx

check your local junk yard or pick 'n pull for a dash. and while you're at it, try and find a junked sport coupe to get the gauge cluster. it has a tach, where as the regular b12 cluster doesn't. it'll save you rigging up a fugly dash mounted tach (and probably about $100).

as for the strut bar, a b13 one will fit with slight modification if you're keeping the current engine, and with probably zero modification if you're doing a GA16DE swap as there is no longer an airbox in the way.

is the MX-6 an RS or LS. i hope you're lucky and have a manual LS. do a KLZE swap, get the ECU eprommed and push that mofo to 300hp N/A!!! totally do-able, and the MX-6 is incredibly light for a 6cyl. 2600lbs is fricken light. it doesn't take much to get the car to a weight/power ratio that's under 10lbs/hp and thats fricken fast.

thx alot for the help and i understand u kept the origannal engine in urs could u explain ur decision behind that and i have also been talking to my dad becuase he is my mechanic and he said that the current engine is better for tweaking and ajusting than the other and acctally my mx6 is a 1990 gt also i think i might have made a mistake and i belive i dondt have the ga16i i think its one of the othjers because i dont have the airbox like all th eothers iv seen

well, best would be to post a picture of the engine bay, so we can tell you what's up. if it's a 1989, the GA16i was the only engine that came in the vehicles in canada and the states from 89-90.

some would argue that the GA16DE is better for tweaking because it's MPFI. the GA16i however, though only being single cam, is a stronger block. finding support for it is tough and most things have to be custom done, but it can take more punishment. It's still fuel injection, so its not as restricted as a carb system, but it's only single point, which does inhibit it a bit. i'm looking to change mine to a dual point system so that i can better accomodate the fuel delivery for a turbo project. but that's still a ways off.

case and point, the 16i is a stronger block, the 16DE is MPFI and DOHC. also, there is little to no aftermarket support for the 16i, though most 16DE support works for it (i just ordered headers for a 16DE for my 16i).

but show us a picture, and we'll go from there.

Ok, so everything i've said since my first post engine-wise is out the window. that's the e16. refer to the 2nd paragraph for swap info on this. you could still drop in an SR20DE, but again, it's going to need alot of work. the e15et is a nice drop-in with a serious power difference.

here is a good link to some stuff you can do with that engine if you decide to simply rebuild it (which isn't a bad idea, from what i've read it's a solid engine that responds well to modding).

also, it would be a good idea to just search through the "E/CA-series and GA16i engines" sub-forum. for additional information.

i can't really help you much other than pointing you in the right direction. i'm mostly read in the GA series stuff, as it's what pertains to my vehicle:p. but i cant wait to see the finished product.

ok and also could i still do the GA16DE swap if i got all the stuff and if so will that require new mounts and everything and if i doing a full swap would the sr20 be better if i have the money

your car is a b12. if you scroll down to the second half of the post, it shows what will work with an E-series B12.

as for the swap stuff, i really can't help you as i'm unsure. like i said i did all my research regarding GA16i swaps and such.

Ok so i have decided to ether go with the sr20de or the sr20det for this car so for this swap i will need the motor the trans and the wiring harness and computer and also alot of modification but i have yet to see any post or threads dealing with exatlly what has to be done so can some one point me in the right direction of where to start i am planing on the sr20det from the lter models fwd to try to ease the pain and not have to do a rwd conversion

get a JDM sr20DET from a bluebird. it's your best bet as it's the only JDM FWD version, and as they'll always have way lower mileage, a JDM engine/tranny are your best bet.

SR20DE into B12 stuff

that's probably got most of what you're gonna want to know. as for the turbo stuff, i believe it comes top mount intercooled, so you'll have to modify it to front mounted yourself. and you'll want to. without a hood scoop, that TMIC will heat soak so quick, you'll think it re-entered earth's atmosphere.
