Hi all. I have a 2001 SE auto (I know, I know) and am interested in whatever I can do to get increased performance out of my 2.0 without voiding my warranty. There are so many products making crazy claims (from gas additives to air intake "cyclones", etc) including some that claim to boost gas mileage AND horsepower (and regrow hair, and make you more attractive to chicks, and....)

Does anybody have some good first hand experience with effective, simple performance boosters that will not void my warranty? (BTW PLEASE don't take this thread down the road of "dealerships gotta PROVE your bolt-on intake, new headers, custom race tranny, etc etc caused your breakdown." Dealerships take the not-unreasonable view that anything that makes your engine perform dramatically beyond its original specs will, in turn, shorten its life.)

Thanks!

The Magnuson Moss Act basically states a manufacturer cannot void your warranty for using an aftermarket part to replace a part the manufacturer would not provide for free.

If the part you install causes the malfunction then the specific section the warranty covering this area will be voided.

They cannot void your warranty for a simple exhuast upgrade or intake etc.... If they say it does then they are BS'ing you or are simply ignorant of the federal law.

sorry it got taken down this road...but that's the law

But emission modifications are a big no-no.

correct... with todays high flow cats there is really no reason for people to jack with it anyways...

That's one of the reasons you will always see in NPM projects that we hook up the O2 sensors in the proper spot after header installs and we run cats on all the project cars..

We also suggest installing a cat and relocating the O2 when you install a header on models that came equipped with only the close coupled cat built into the exhaust manifold and no addition cat. (Federal models). Keeping the correct reading for the ecu....keeps the OBDII system happy.

The thinking that a cat robs a ton of HP is old school thinking.. The newer cats are really efficent.

Anything NISMO, it is the Nissan racing development team and sell anything and everything for modding your SR20. I don't know whether NISMO officially sells parts in the US yet but I've taken a look at their catalog while visiting Nissan headquarters. Plenty of different parts to buy, the only thing not in the catalog was the prices. NISMO said they'd be in the US by the end of 2002.

You won't lose your warranty if you take out the cat. You'll just be breaking the law and can face $1000s in fines if someone can prove it was intentional.

The Magnuson Act pretty much means the following:
If you replace your intake pipe, you've voided the stock pipe.
If you put in springs, you void your suspension.
If you put in a catback, you void your exhaust system.

There are few mods which will cause them to deny warranty coverage on big important things. If you installed no2 or other forced induction, it WOULD void your engine warranty and possibly your transmission too.

Think about it like this: If what you're doing puts something at risk of being damaged, Nissan has to prove what you did broke the car. An intake and exhaust won't hurt your car. Probably not even headers. But BIG alterations will start voiding things. If you dealer tries to pull something on you, think about it this way. You don't have to prove anything. The burden of proof is on the service guys at your dealer. Not you. Use common sense, it'll work with the whole warranty thing.

My service dept. doesn't eve care about my mods. I'm running 30 or so HP over stock and they don't care at all. They like my shiny pipes. They even offered to install a turbo upgrade for me within my warranty.

Good luck and don't worry. The sr20 isn't typically modded anyway, there's no reason for them to expect it to be seriously messed with.

PABLO!? IS THAT YOU?
----------------------------------
Back to the subject...everything said is true, stick w/ less dramatic mods like intake, headers, and exhaust and you should be fine. Addtionally, most well known and respected manufacturers of aftermarket parts will warranty their parts and if the totally f*ck up your car they will most likely cover it (this is why you avoid Kmart brand crap on eBay...). Whatever you do, avoid late night infomercials and $6 20+ hp eBay crap. They are nothing but scams and (most likely) you can do the mod. for free. For example, there is a 'kit' for sale on eBay to adjust your timing. Yes, adjusting your timing increases performance, but do a search on any auto message board and you will find advice and instructions for FREE.

Anyhow, I'm getting off subject, unless you are running No2, swapping engines, or sticking a Batmobile jet engine on your car, you should be fine.

Put it all back!! LOL

Hey i dunno about you guys but if i did a mod on my car and it somehow caused a problem in my tranny or engine or anything i'd put my stock parts back on before i take it to my nissan dealer and say "SOMETHING'S WRONG.....THIS IS UNDER MY WARRANTY RIGHT??" i dunno if its against the law or anything but if i had a turbo put in my car and it caused serious tranny problems and was gonna be a $2000 problem (like a new tranny), I would take the time to bolt off my turbo and put all my stock parts back on to have Nissan pay for it.
