i have a 2000 pathy , and i recently had it in the shop for an o2 sensor and the mechanic also added i would need front brakes soon...took it into consideration but i thought my brakes were fine. Now, the brakes squeal only the first time i press them from a cold start, then it goes away... MY question : Is this just going to get worse ? and is 600$ a reasonable price ?

Highly appreciated,

I assume he was telling you the front pads are worn and will be finished soon.
I would suggest you take a look, if pads are worn to 2 -3 mm its time to get new ones.
You can put then in yourself and if rotors are not to badly grooved you can go through the bed in procedure and not get the rotors machined.
If they have bad tram tracks then get them machined. $15 ea around here.
If they go under thickness then you will need new rotors.
Go it yourself and even with new rotors its no where near $600
