Problems with manual 200sx tranny (posibly shifter linkage)

1054 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  b14_200sx
I was attempting to put a CD deck in my 1997 200sx SE and the deck wouldnt work, so i put everything back together and got the deck back in the box to return it. But when i cranked the car, the shift lever snapped back past 4th gear. The engine idled smoothly, and reved up fine, but when i tried to move the shifter foward, I heard a creaking noise like a cable being stretched, and it would not move side to side at all. It also moves foward and backward more than is natural. I dont think that it could have anything to do with me trying to install the CD player, but i thought i'd put that there just in case someone knows more than I can see about where the shifter linkage is. If anyone can help I would appreciate it, otherwise its going to have to be towed in and im gonna pay a chunk of $$ to get it fixed.

I highly doubt it has anything to do with your radio install.

The linkage is a rod linkage on your car, so there is no cable. If your linkage came undone, you would have little to no resistance moving the shifter all around.

Sounds like you might have a busted motor mount, based on your description.

I knew it was a rod linkage, i was just trying to describe the noise. But if it is a motor mount, is there any way that i could easily confirm that? (I'm trying not to sound too stupid, but i really dont know anything about motor mounts) and I'm assuming that in any case I'm probably just going to have to have it towed somewhere and spend the cash...
