I know this is beating a dead horse but I own an 04 Spec V and I've loved it since the day I bought it. I got it brand new in mid 04 with an extended 100k gold preferred warranty. I put nearly 99k on it with absolutely no oil consumption. What started as a low RPM rattle and a quart of new oil every 2-4 weeks led to the obvious from the title. The super screwed up thing is that the warranty covers everything the cat messed up to include the whole engine and exhaust. The only problem is that they said that it doesn't cover the cat itself. The service advisor is the most awsome guy i've ever even heard of anybody dealing with and he almost got yelled at for fighting for approval from the Nissan top dawgs to do all the work on the house. They said that since the cat wasn't covered and it is the root of the problem that he can't do the work by warranty. Talk about pissed! I tried to call them myself but they were closed already. I've found cases where some folks got the work and some didn't. Is there any possible advise I can get from someone that was in my shoes that might have been told 'no' but letter got a 'yes'? PLEASE HELP

hmm.. that's weird... I got mine completely covered and repaired for FREE.... not sure where you are, but I am in western canada... I was told that the pre-cat has a 140,000 km or 8 year warranty... i have a 03, with only 75k on it... and now I have a brand new motor!.... they found one bad coil, so it is replaced now too... nissan said that the pre-cat WAS the problem for my ruined motor.... so I don't know why you are having problems.....

i know about the oil consumption... I was going through over a litre every 2 weeks.... gotta love the sound of the engine running on nothing but metal on metal... when i checked my oil i could see bits of metal in it all the time... lol....

yeah... they were able to take off one of the O2 sensors... and looked inside.... all they saw was a big pile of crap inside... so they really could figure out it wasn't just a broken motor for me...

CAT

the thing is that all that crap gets sucked in to the motor and the motor is no good after that. its better just to replace the motor.

That's real nice Comet302. Here in Panama City, FL they told me that the thing was only good for 80,000 miles. I was referred to a local specialist that might as well had told me to go screw myself. I'm escalading my concerns through Nissan. I don't know how far I will get or if it will even help. I also have no doubt that several folks have tried this before but I've seen different results. The most messed up thing is the different imputs folks are getting in regards to the coverage of this part. That scares the heck out of me for something that can go without notice. I think a guy on here even said that he was on engine number 3 under 30,000 miles because of this. I'm opening another blog to get as much info as I can. The so-called 'next higher level' is supposed to be giving me a call on 16 Jan. Please help

engines are 3yr/36,000 mi warranty, unless you get extended warranty. then its up to salesman to bend you over and... you get the picture. if you dont have much money they will give you a cheap warr. that will cover simple things, and if you hve money they will get you the platinum extended warr. that covers up to ?yr/100,000 on emissions (dont quote me im not sure on the milage). gold is 8yr/ 80,000 miles on emissons. if the emissions cause the engine to go bad then it MAY be warranted

^^^Engines are 5 years/ 60K miles powertrain warranty.

We ALWAYS replace the cats under warranty, when we replace engines, atleast at our dealership we do! They MUST replace that cat of yours under warranty!

I got the 5 year/100,000 mile security plus gold preferred warranty. That's from Nissan. It wasn't dealer specific or some outside company. I still have 6 months/792 miles left on it but it's still there. If they don't want to cover the pre-cat that's cool. The warranty does cover the rest of the exhaust and the engine as a whole. Any mechanical failure that is no fault of my own should still be covered especially if something else in the mechanical design is to blame. The closest other Nissan dealer ship is 90 miles away. I feel like my mechanical warranty is not being honored behind a mechanical flaw. None of this should even be an issue.

I looked into it some more at work and NO, the cat will not be covered but YES, the engine should be covered!
I know it's a hassle but I think you should try another dealership or call Nissan corprate!

I've been getting the run around or straight rejected by the folks at 800-NISSAN1 since day 2. Everytime someone says 'no' I just ask to talk to the next person in the food chain who alway just so happens to never be immediately available. I have to wait 24-48 hours for someone to call me back. I've even told them that I would sign a warranty waiver on a new engine and pay for parts and labor on an aftermarket header.

I just realized that I got that ECU reprogram done about 2 years ago to supposedly prevent this problem. I'm going to see what type of response I get when I throw that out there.

its not a correction, but the ecu caused the car to screw up the cat. so they reprogramed the ecu so the emissions would be different. the advisor would tell you after if you get a check code and its the cat its now messed up and the ecu caused it to go bad. therefore you would have to get another one. (normally under warranty)

This crap is so bogus. I'm steady getting the run around with Nissan. Everytime I ask to talk to someone I get put on hold just to be told that I'll be getting a call within 2 days. I loved my car and I was waiting for the warranty to run out so I could start building what I had. I'm not about to pay for a new engine in a car that I still have a note on especially when I have a warranty that's supposed to cover motor damage that I didn't cause. They are pretty slick about making an attaching part that is just a precious few inches from the motor not be covered under the same warranty. It kills me even more that they know that it can have such a catastrophic affect on the motor as a whole. They got me mixed up with someone else if they think I'm about to keep paying for a paperweight I didn't break. I'd rather take the hit and give them the keys so they can sale it for the $2 that it's now worth and get myself a 240sx with cash.

i really feel for you. i dont know why they wont change it. they get payed either way. with this economy you would think they would want the money than nothing at all. but dont take this to the dealer cause i dont want to get in trouble
