Out of time?

Howdy Everone!
I'm new to the board and I hope I didn't screw up my Pathfinder.
I have a 87 Pathfinder with a 3.0.
On Sunday I changed out the spark plugs, wires, Dist. Cap and rotor to get ready for a smog check.
When I tightened down the rotor, I did not make sure that the socket came off the bolt and it was left in the cap, duh:lame: .
I drove it like that for about 20 mins when it gave out.
I put in a new rotor and cap but I need to advance it as far as I can to keep it running.
Did I screw up the timing?
Any ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Jess

You may have gotten it jammed in there and slipped the main shaft somehow. I have no way to tell from here. With the engine at TDC for #1, the rotor should point to the left side of the engine just at about the 7:40 clock position, as viewed from above and standing at the front of the vehicle. That's just after the left cap screw hole, clock-wise.
