My '96 Sentra is using about a quart of oil every other fill up, and there's a growing sludge on the back of my car. A friend off-handedly suggested that maybe there's oil in the exhaust system. Does that sound right to anyone? How do I fix it?

You could be burning oil. That could be caused by bad oilrings, bad headgasket, or warn valveguides.

A very common leak on GA-motors is the "crank pulley seal". Are there any puddles or drops of oil under your car when you park? If so, and it looks like they are coming from around the oil pan area, there is a good chance it is this. But first, just diagnose your situation. Burning oil would result in blue smoke coming from the tail pipe. A leak is self-explanitory.
