Hi

I'm looking at a 1997 1/2 Altima.

The owner claims that the car will not pass NY State inspection because it fails to read out the necessary elements when hooked up to the inspection computer. He says that the dealer wants to sell him a new computer.

Is this a known problem, is there a known cure other than a new computer??

If so, the car is in good shape and I'd buy it! :)

Thanks in advance for any insights...

In NYS, any 1996 or newer car that shows the "check engine" light needs to be checked via the computer for errors, and anything that shows up must be repaired before an inspections sticker can be issued.

So the question remains is this a problem that is known to anyone, and will pulling the battery and maybe the battery backup battery in the computer as well cause the computer to reset and then not show the error in polling the sensors?

Or is this the sign of a dead brain computer or worse.
Anyone with experience in this area??
