I was checking maf and read somewhere that if the wire doesn't glow then I need a new air flow meter which is sky high. I took the air filter out and tube leading to the air flow meter and I guess the wire that's just past the screen was what I was supposed to be checking for a glow.

I took it for a test drive with filter and tube removed and noticed that when the rpm got to 2500 it was hard to accelerate. I assume this is just normal when removed.

Was I even looking at the correct wire for the glow?

I've only heard of it glowing when the engine is shut off. It heats up for about 2 seconds to burn any deposits off of the wire. You won't catch that unless you have somebody else turn it off while you are looking. I don't beleive it's supposed to do that while it's running, the ECU is supposed to attempt to maintain a certain voltage through it, which really isn't that high. I think it's 5 volts, or so.
