I don't know the proper terms for exhaust parts so forgive me if i misname something.....I have an exhaust that's rattling on startup and when the engine is bogged down. I think it may also be the culprit of the vibration/hum that i hear at 3,200rpm. I'm trying to replace the clamp but i don't want to screw anything up...

I have a 1994 D21 4x4 KA24E Hardbody with extended cab (XE). Here's what Nissan thinks my exhaust looks like...

Notice that the exhaust manifold seems to converge into one pipe which is then bolted to the Catalytic converter. Now here's what mine looks like...

On the left side of the picture is where the 4 pipes from the exhaust manifold converge into one pipe...then that's bolted to another pipe which is then bolted to the catalytic converter. It seems to be different than in any pictures i've seen!

Anyway, you can see the problem in the picture. See that shiny wear spot on the metal? That's where the exhaust is sliding in an out of the clamp. Shouldn't that be welded to the flange? Why is that clamp there at all? I don't want to replace it if everything's going to fall apart once that's off.

I'm afraid of doing anything because I don't even know what i'd replace if that did fall apart. A new exhaust manifold doesn't seem to look the same as what i have according to Nissan's images.

it looks like you have a header not a factory manifold. the shiny part looks to be part of the old exhaust the is meant to clamp over the header (which it shouldn't be like that). IMO with as rusty as your exhaust is, you may start thinking its time to get stainless or just new.

Looks like you're correct...I do have a header and didn't even realize it....sigh....

I just ordered a new exhaust manifold and front pipe from rockauto.com. Hopefully this will fix my rattle...
