There should be a warning light on the dash if the hatch is open or ajar. Not sure if there's a dinger with it when you go into gear, but I think yes. The switch is part of the latch, so if it isn't working, there's something wrong in your latch assembly or wiring.
Liftgate open warning light/bell/something
So, twice now have I broken the back liftgate window because it was up when I drove, unknowingly, through the low opening Condo garage door.
Any suggestions as to a warning bell or flashing light that I could install so I WON'T do this again ?!! Is there a warning light all ready installed ??????
I think what happens is that when I get into the drivers seat to drive away, my knee touches the liftgate button.
Maybe even put a sticker on the front window to remind me to look, or SOMETHING, PLEASE !!

I just checked a '16 out on the lot. There's no dinger, but the yellow warning triangle in the cluster should be lit and the cluster info display should have a big, red bar across the back of the car image, along with text saying "Liftgate Ajar".
