Hi, I dont own a Nissan but I am thinking about buying one. The one I am looking at is a 95 Maxima SE with a V6 and manual trans.

First question- How reliable is the engine/trans in these cars? The one I am looking at has about 180,000 miles on it, I and dont want to have to worry about replacing major parts out in 10k miles. I usually wouldn't consider buying a car with this many miles, but I have seen Nissans run forever and was wondering if this applies to these cars.

Second question- Since this is a manual trans, how hard is it to change a clutch in these cars? Can it be done in a driveway? Will I need any special tools to get the job done? I am pretty good with working on cars, but I am used to working on old RWD V8 cars. I dont really have much experience with FWD as far as pulling engines and trannies. I really hate having to bring my car to a shop to get work done, so I try to do as much as possible, and I am sure this will be something that will need to be done eventually.

I really appreciate any help you can give me.

I have seen the VQ30de at 200k-300k+...depends on how well taken care of it was.

Good news is that a replacement engine or tranny is about $300-500 each, so you won't be out too much money if you're a DIYer. I know some guys in our car club that have changed engines & trans in a driveway. Not sure on the process myself though.
