I want to know how reliable JDM engines are? Has anyone heard of a Jasper replacement motor? I have heard they come with 75k warranties and come completly rebuilt with stronger internals. I have a less then adequate ga16 and I need to get a new motor. I just dropped it off at the shop about an hour ago to get the oil leak fixed, throttle adjusted, possible Tps replaced, and to check if my power steering fluid is leaking. I need the existing motor to last until I have the money to buy a new motor. I want to know if I purchase a GA16DE, can I put an aftermarket turbo on it, or do I have to search the whole country for a GA16DET? If there is such a thing. The rest of the mods will have to come little by little. I also don't know why I am encountering so much resistance from my mechanic and other enthusiasts about fixing up that little car, I guess the haters are comming out of the wood work.

How much is the Jasper motor and where did you hear about them? 75K warranty! That's amazing! I'd like to look into those. JDM's are built to tighter specs than USDM's, so in theory they should be more reliable. I've heard nothing but good things about JDM's. I can't say beyond a reasonable doubt that a GA16DET ever existed or not, but yeah, there is a turbo kit available for the GA16DE, I think hotshot makes it and it costs like $3K. About what an SR20DET swap would cost you, plus you'd have a 30K mile JDM SR20DE engine with that. I wouldn't call them haters, they just don't understand why a person would spend that kind of money on a car that isn't worth much. They're looking out for your best interest. If I didn't feel confident about my mecahnical ability I wouldn't have bought a 9 year old car, despite their reliability reputation. I know I can get a good motor cheap and I know I can swap it out myself in the event that my motor takes a crap. If I didn't have a cheap means to repair my car, I'd scrap it if the engine took a crap, plain and simple. If you're comfotable spending what it'd cost you to swap an engine into your car, then do it, but realize that if you wreck the car the day after, all that investment is lost. Doesn't matter to the insurance company, they'll give you what it's worth book value, and that's only after you twist their arm. That's a lot of risk you'll be taking.

I dunno, call around and ask. A JDM GA16DE shipped to your house, or the garage that is going to do the work might run around $400-$450. Labor might be as high as $1K. I know a guy that had a JDM SR20DE swap in his SE-R, and the labor was $1K so since that was a straight across swap, so I'd guess that price would be close fora straight across GA16DE swap as well.

By the way, 200SXpower, your sig reminds me of something I tell my brother in law, the camaro spoof, when he says, "There's no replacement for displacement" and I tell him, "Yes there is, it's called "HP to weight ratios", and they're all that matter." It really pisses him off when I tell him that a well tuned SR20VE can run a 13 flat with no boost and no juice. How's that for all motor?

Speaking of hp to weight ratios, do you think I can make a dunebuggy-like tubular frame, put four wheels on it, mount the engine on it with just the necessary parts and run it? All you see is the frame, four wheels, a driver, and a engine sitting out in the air. I bet it would go pretty fast...

If you can do the welding and can get the tubing cheap and have it bent cheap or bend it yourself, yeah, but otherwise I'd say just buy a dune buggy. You'd be awefull heavy still, considering dune buggies are typically VW air cooled motors that don't weigh much. (Assuming you were thinking of sticking a water cooled Nissan engine in it)

if my motor was about to die, how much do ya think a 1.6 to 1.6 swap would cost? engine cost? how much ya think a shop would charge for labor?

well if your motor is about to die why dont you just do a JDM SR20DET swap. more power and sure as hell quicker than the 1.6 L

thought about the sr20det, but from what i've read, i'm lookin at least 5k. that's a whole lot more than $1500. if i was ever in a position to drop 5k+ at one time into a car, it would probably be a downpayment on the new Z. i only wish i knew more about cars so i could do the swap myself... but after talking to all you guys, i now realize i'm a car retard... intake and timing is just about all i trust myself doing.
also... what is the diffrence between a jdm ga16 and a usdm ga16?
