Did you first perform a compression test on all cylinders; it could verify the condition of the head gasket. If you find a weak cylinder or two adjacent weak cylinders, that can certainly signify a blown head gasket. It's also possible that there may be a crack in the cylinder wall or somewhere in the block causing the loss of coolant leaking into an oil gallery.

To loosen the big exhaust tube fitting on the EGR, apply some Liquid Wrench or PB Blaster to the threads, then tap the fitting lightly with a small hammer to set up a vibration allowing the Penetrant to do it's magic. Now use a very large adjustable wrench to loosen the fitting.
