Back in January my governor gear wore out and searching this forum I found the solution, fixed it, and went on my merry way. Well today (early October) the gear wore out on my again, forcing me to leave my car 20 miles from home at a relative's house.

It's probably been around 10k miles since I replaced it, but the original part lasted about 75k. Does anyone have an idea of what could be causing this, and how to fix it short of a transmission rebuild?

You might want to verify the replacement gear "wore out". I had similar experience and upon removing the replacement gear discovered it wasn't worn out the second time but was broken. Seems a piece of the first gear must have migrated until it wedged the replacement gear thus breaking it. This time I removed the pan and flushed and blew out the remaining pieces with solvent (kerosene) and compressed air. I only made it 2k miles after replacing it the first time.
