I just bought a Nissan Sentra ( South African spec ) . The car comes with a GA16 DS motor( carb fed model). It really is a nice car!!.

However the head seem to be mixing water and oil .....somewhere. So at the moment , the entire motor is stripped. Got the head welded and reconditioned.
So , wot really caused the head to give up..??It seems to a very common problem with the GA16 . Cos the guy who fixed the head says he is doing about 5-6 a month !! nissan seems to deny all reponsibility .....and all they say is USE NISSAN APPROVED ANTIFREEZE. My car was fully serviced at the agents ALL its life and still it popped.

And worse still the car isn't driven hard:(:(:(

So how does one fix the problem.........apart from buying a Honda????

I have not heard of this issue, i and all my friends own either a ga16ge motor and have not had a problem at all. I raced my car for a while and never had one problem. Also my friend has a 1992 sentra with the GA motor and it is working fine for a 150,000 mile engine.

Hi Sean007

I did also had the same problem with my sentra ± 3 years ago. The head also cracked because the motor overheated after bursting a water pipe.

Sean007 could you please e-mail me at [email protected] or [email protected] I would like to come in contact with other SA-sentra owners

***** Sean, I have not ever seen any cracked GA16DE heads. I am asssuming your SA spec. GA16DS heads are the same. The only answer must be that there are alot of people overheating their GA's out there. Do the SA spec. GA16DS's have variable intake cam timing [VTC] like the USA's GA16DE?

well, its carb-fed so do you think it might be closer to the ga16i or even the e16 motors?

***** No, It most definately is a GA16D [twin cam] family engine. I was just wondering if it has the VTC system, like our USA versions have.

The SA-spec. GA16DE(feul-injection) don't have the VTC system altough it do have the same head without the VTC solinoid and VTC gearing system but have the space. The SA-Spec. GA16DS(carb) have a difrent head eg. no space for the VTC solinoid and VTC gearing. And yes wo do crack a lot of heads this side because of overheating.

***** Hello fos160se, and thanks for your informative reply. Would you know of any internet links that might allow me to see a picture of the GA16DS, without the protrusion in the front of the head, where the VTC would be? Thanks again. :)
