This is probably the most retarded question, but is there a flywheel involved in an automatic tranny? I've never really understood how the whole torque converter process works. If there is a flywheel, is it utilized in the same manner as in a manual tranny? Would the same gains be realized by upgrading/lightening it?

There is no flywheel. There is a drive plate which the torque converter bolts to. It has a gear on the circumference for the starter to engage.

Since the torque converter (filled with fluid) is attached to the plate, it's weight is negligable compared to the weight of the converter, and lightening it would not accomplish anything except weakening it since it is quite thin to start with.
