I have a 1991 Hb 4 cylinder (KA24). The truck has been running fine until Monday evening I ran into the grocery store for 10 minutes. The truck would turn over ,but would not start. Cheked to make sure the truck was firing(OK),checked for fuel(OK),smelled gas really strong. After about 20 minutes the truck finally started ,but it was pouring black smoke from tailpipe.I have checked the codes and got a 13 Engine temp. sensor. Will the engine temp sensor make the timing move around 10 to 15 degrees? Do you just replace the engine temp sensor? Any other ideas!! Thanks

I think if the engine overheats the ECU richens the mixture and backs off the timing to try to cool the engine down with unburnt fuel.

Just one point. Now would be a good time to clear the codes. The old error codes are saved in the ECU, so now that the new sensor is in, clear that memory.
