Engine rattle

Ok, I'll start by saying I have searched.

From everything I have read however, it sounds like all the rattles talked about are at idle or in lower gears, which my car does not do.

I get a rattle (very rhythmic, like it goes with the engine revolution for a full rev, then stops for a couple revs, then starts through a full revolution). The revolution that it rattles on it does it 4 times real quick from my best count. So once per cylinder is my thinking.

The sound is hard to describe. It is not exactly like a rock in a soup can. It sounds more muffled than that. Like the soup can is lined on the inside with fabric, so you still get a little metallic sound, but not too metallic.

This occurs when i'm going roughly 35 mph or above and start to accelerate in a high gear.

My first guess was pinging (i personally have never had anyone point out an engine pinging in real life, so I don't know the exact sound). When I thought it was that, I went and had my injectors cleaned(professionally, as i heard it was bad to put the stuff in your gas tank) and that tank I also filled with 91 and put in octane booster, and it still did it. So I am thinking it isn't pinging.

It has been making this sound for a few months now, slowly getting louder. Just very recently (like in the past week) the engine has been making a very very quiet mechanical squeak/rattle. I am guessing this is also the coming of a bad timing chain tensioner, but it has been so recent, that I don't think the two noises are related.

Sorry for starting another engine rattle thread. If I somehow missed a thread that talks about this, I apologize.

I got the same problem here.It is the same that it would happen when I shift into the third or higher. Its frequency goes up along with the speed.I can hear it very clearly if the clutch is in.
Does anyone know how much it costs to fix this problem?Seems like I have to go check it out.

It is hard to diagnose rattles. Two thoughts: Loose exhaust system. This may not be the sound you describe, but I had those thin metal shields rattle. Worse yet, the front pipe of the exhaust rusted out and was disconnected, causing more vibration. The muffler shop cut off all those shields and found the pipe was disconnected before the cat. Who knows how long I drove it like that? Also, my exhaust hanger at the cat rusted out. Maybe that is what caused the other problems? Just brain storming, but maybe at a certain RPM noises would increase due to the frequency, like a tire out of balance that starts bouncing at a certain speed. So, check the exhaust system if this remotely rings a bell. Maybe a bad transmission mount could cause extra vibration. I also have a Saturn. The top engine mount fails, especially with the manual transmission. Don't know if it is a problem with these cars. Maybe jack up the car and look for anything that seems loose underneath.

Thanks for the replies guys. I am going to be taking it to a mechanic this upcoming weekend hopefully if i get time. I will make sure to have him check motor mounts as well as timing chain tensioners.

joeli if i find out what causes it, I will pm you.

Also I am almost positive it is not exhaust related. It is much to rhythmic. Also the exhaust system is one thing that i have checked fairly recently, and everything was good to go.

The rhythm leads me to believe it is engine related, and not likely just random rattling.

Thanks 98sentra.That sure helps me a lot on planning to go check it out and without having a car inspection(hopefully)and costs 80 bucks more.My budget is really tight.

I feel the same that it isn't a exhaust problem. The noise comes from the front end of the car,not underneath the car.

heres the most common cause of engine rattle so far that i knoticed is timing chain tensioner heres what you do start your car and get like a hammer put one end of the hammer where the cam sprokets are on the valve cover and put your ear on the other end rev your car up if you have to and if the rattle comes from there its the upper timing chain tensioner its like 50 bucks but you gotta get it at a dealership thats what happen to my car i got pics of my chain tensioner on how torn up it is on my site hope this helps out some one

Is it the exact same situation? If it always rattles, then it is most likely the chain tensioner like everyone says.

If it is how I described, then it is most likely pinging. In my case I had gone too long without cleaning my air filter, or changing my fuel filter. I took care of both of those and the engine runs like new.

The rattle from my car sounds like coming from the wheels, not from the engine.I am suspecting about that the wheel bearings have gone bad because if the wheels go faster, the rattle go faster too.I am guessing that I used to have bad CV axles before and the bearings gone bad before I changed the axles.Recently It gets louder and I need to fix it up in a short time before it gets real serious.
Like 98sentragxe,I guess my car also has the rattle from the time chain tensioner, but it's not serious and it'll go better if I have my oil change.
I am sure that these two rattles come from different problems.
