Well for about 3 weeks now my engine ticks very loudly almost knocking until its warmed up.

I replaced all the belts and decided to do a basic tune-up myself. Then I went to look @ the oil and found PURE SLUDGE!

The oil hadnt been changed for about 10 months. I took it to a quick change place that has some real cool guys working @ it. They drained the oil and i asked them to bring me a sample of it. He brought back a little tray of it that had lumps of sludge/black oil misture. It looked terrible.

He even called over the other guys to check out how bad the oil was. It was kind of embarassing lol. Well they flushed the entire engine 2 times while I was there and added brand new oil (synthetic/W30 mix).

I started it up and the knocking was there, but only lasted about 5 seconds. They were very nice guys and told me I can take it in for free for check-ups whenever I want until my next oil change. They said it will probably take several flushes throughout my next oil changes to completely clean the engine and hopefully eliminate the knocking for good.

I wish I had a picture of the sludge. Think of the blackest color you can and add a greasy lump texture to it. That's what my pathy has been running on for almost a year. I feel so bad for it - I am so happy it didn't break down on me. Proves that this thing is a real trooper to run on basically entire sludge.

The engine flushings and new oil ran me 78 dollars. - So not bad for about 30 min of them working on my car.

Now if I can just find a bottom cover for my engine... :woowoo:

synthetic oil? now you must alsways use synthetic oil cant go back.. i doubt flushing the engine will twke out all the sludge.. i tried that ive fushed it out evertime i changed oil for a year then i rebuilt it and the rocker arms head bolts, pistons, just about everything was just caked with sludge.. but i admit its definately a stong motor id say one of the best.. it just keeps going

I am taking it to get flushed out again here towards the end of May.

I am not sure what type fo engine flush you did, but this involved high pressured cleaning solution being flooded into the engine and drained out once. Then they filled it with cleaning solution. capped it. And Had my run the engine @ 2k rpms for about 10 minutes. After that they flooshed one more time. Then filled with fresh oil.

I know there is still caked on sludge along the pistons and such - But every engine flush I think is going to get it one more s tep to clean.

yah but its definately not recommended to go back youd be down grading the engine oil if you did. but whatever just something i learned. personally i wouldnt..

yah i guess that the engine flush will clean it up a bit everytime.. carefull how much you flush it i hear on older engines sometimes if its cracked somewhere sludge is what seals it from leaking and if you take the sludge away you have a leaky block, and sometimes to much chemical can wear away or break down the seal materials and you wouldnt want to have to remove the trans to replace the rear main seal. oh when you change the timing belt replace th crank and cam seals.. just my opinon

Did you experience smoke from the exhaust at all?
