I read an online guide to checking the ECU for why the check engine light is on and right on the ECU it says

DO NOT FORCE PAST STOP

AFTER PERFORMING SELF DIAGNOSIS
TURN SELECTOR FULLY COUNTER-CLOCKWISE
TO STOP

What were to happen if the screw was forced past the stop?

It would be helpful for all members if you would tell us what car/motor you have.

Sorry I didn't post any engine information. It is a 1996 Nissan Maxima with the 3.0L V6 Engine.

Well if the ECU becomes locked in the reset position I suspect you'd be screwed... :p C'mon, think about it here!

You could probably take it apart and if you're handy with a soldering iron, remove and replace the switch, shouldn't be all that complicated. :p
