I have an E16 engine in my 84 Sentra (USA non-California). I am planning to replace the coolant temperature sensor (CTS)(has 2 conductors and goes to the ECU). I have the Nissan shop manual which says it has a CTS and has a drawing of it installed in a section of the engine, but is not helpful. I and a friend looked for it very carefully on the engine a number of times, but couldn't find it (there's just not a whole lot of stuff on that engine). I talked to a Nissan dealer parts dept. who said he had no more info. than I had. I searched the forums here, but couldn't find anything. Does anyone know where it is on the engine?

On these older engines, does this sensor or the oxygen sensor actually affect driveability, or are they emissions control only?

Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The CTS should be located behind the oil filter. The CTS can affect driveability due to a possible incorrect mixture; not sure about the O2 sensor on these older cars.
