I just picked up an 1988 Pulsar NX with the 1.6l sohc and carbureted. Sure as hell didn’t know what I was getting into. I’m pretty sure the E16 non-turboed. I blew the head gasket on it and took the head off to replace it. I noticed a pretty big divot in the head and my machine shop said it’s junk. I can’t find another head for it under a grand and I’m looking at around trying to hit 150 horsepower once all is done. My question is this: Should I buy a rebuilt E16 and turbo it or should I swap it out for something else?

Swap it if you want that much power and want to get that deep into it, but keep in mind that you'll have to swap the EGI harness and ECM, as well...and, FYI, an 88 Pulsar NX in the US should have an E16i with throttle body fuel injection, not carbureted.
