Are there any disadvantages of having a non-working cruise control? Could this mess with the fuel economy in anyway?

Also, would it be possible to remove the cruise control vacuum lines and switches (all the basic wiring) without side effects to the control unit or the other devices that are wired into the unit?

if the problem is electrical it shouldn't affect fuel economy at all. if the vacuum diaphragm is leaking, then it will, but you'll also get a code for running lean and probably have an erratic idle. If you do disconnect the vacuum supply just plug off the lines and don't try to use the cruise control. Only real disadvantage is no cruise control.
