Hey peeps..

another newby question. I have not driven a manual tranny for a while. and i was wondering how an 87 sentra clutch should feel when pressed? Should it be soft or hard?

It's kinda stiff when i depress the dang thing. I was told that it should be soft when depressing the clutch. but i thought that it may be different for different cars. My friend has a honda accord and it felt smooth when i pressed down on his clutch. ???

the clutch cable had been replaced since it broke a couple of times i would guess due to stiffness. (happened before the car was passed onto me, this car was a handme down) I have not broken the cable yet.

so does this sound like i need to change the entire clutch or pressure plate??? If i have to then i'll look into what others have done in terms of clutch mods (maybe a stage 1???)

please advise.

My clutch is pretty stiff compared to my dad's B14. It is also sorta spongy.

Rice.. does your pedal need considerable force to be pressed for you to shift? my shifter goes into each gear with no problem but it just sux that my clutch is so dang stiff. (its like opening a rusted door) it also creaks when pressed. any thoughts... would the clutch feel different if i upgraded to a stage 1 from clutchmaster or similar? btw. are you running oem clutch?

My clutch pedal creaks too. I've changed the cable, (it was even stiffer before). I think B12s just have crappy clutches. I believe mine is OEM but the previous owner did change the original. The one that I have now is crap. It has been slipping forever, but never seems to get worse

i would say oem clutch are kindda "springing"... half way tend to be like fliping a bented sheet of metal... looks ok to me... numerous manual cars, and they all feel about the same... even a staged clutch feels about the same (but the travel)...

Rice !!... the thing is that you probably worn the tooth on the pressure plate until the cutted... so now maybe half the tooth are cut in 2.. wich when the cluth is engaged, the pressure surface is half wath is should be!... i changed mine because it was sliping throu long gears like 4 and 5... now its kicking in all gears !!... kindda burns even in 3th stock interns...

the thing is that it wont really worn past that.. one day its gonna break and then you wont have any traction or youll have to power shift to get home !!.... :)

Yeah I know I should atleast check to clutch to make sure it is OK but it's a bitch to do. And, no I don't have a springy clutch. My dad's is though. I really don't like it, it feels like it's kicking your foot, and makes it harder to modulate the clutch nicely.

do you guys think that if the pressure plate was replaced we could have a smoother clutch? i wonder if i do that would there be a difference? and if i could, i wonder if there is a replacement pressure plate that would be smooth and easy to press. i haven't done a search on it, but i will and see if there is something that will come up. you guys heard of such a thing?

*****I have seen this problem before, many times in fact. The reason your clutch pedal is really stiff, is because of the lack of lubrication between the throwout bearing and the machined collar it slides on. Also the throwout shaft bushings get dry too. That is also the reason that your clutch cable has needed replacement, twice! The cable was not designed to handle such severe pedal effort. Both of these ailments should be part of, and taken care of, during a routine clutch replacement. Proper cleaning and relubing of these parts with a high temp wheel bearing grease will solve your issues. Unfortunately, not all mechanics are thorough. I had the same stiff pedal in my B12 when I bought it. The previous owner said he had the clutch replaced recently. After I took the trans. back out, I found that he did have a new clutch, but the schlepp who put it in neglected to service the clutch release components. His laziness [or stupidity?] caused alot of extra work for me. You'll have to pull your trans out to fix your problem, and you might as well check the disc and pressure plate while you're in there. If your clutch is original, you might as well replace it then.
