I've dug around but so far have found no one who currently stocks or sells shells or toppers for these older model trucks.

I guess I could build one myself. Any thoughts on this either way?

I have a 1996 HB XE King Cab and Leer makes one specific for this model... I was going to get one but the wife says I don't need it. Find your local Leer dealer and they can have it in 2-3 weeks.

losing three MPG is a bit unsettling but sometimes I really need that extra dry space

Well, mine is a high top 'glass topper. I don't think the weight had anything to do with the MPG hit, it was all in the aero drag of the high top design.
Between the topper removal, and avoiding E10, I've picked up close to 5-6 MPG overall. A very noticable improvement when gas was hovering in the $4/gallon area.
I like the extra storage area, but it's not something I need, most of the time.

Got mine from Craig's List. Not the best but it was cheap. Check your local auction sites.
