I decided to replace my wheel bearings, and in the process replace my brake pads. Both of which I have never done before. I had my rusty mechanic dad helping, and everything went fine on the bearing replacement. The problem is the darn brake pads. I went to Autozone and bought the Duralast Ceramic pads. Once we installed them, we can't get the new pads over the rotor. We pushed the caliper back, but it seems like the rotor is about 1/2 inch wider than the caliper with the pads. What am I missing? Do they make a thinner pad? It has to be something stupidly simple.

Do you have the cylinder(s) in as far as they go?

Usually I'll get a C-clamp and a piece of something wide and solid (wood does the trick). Put the wood over the cylinder(s), C-clamp it on, and keep tightening until the cylinder(s) go back far enough so you can slip the calipers back on. If you're still having trouble, removing some brake fluid from the master cylinder can make pushing the cylinder(s) in easier.

I haven't changed the pads on the the Pathy yet (might have to this spring), but I've done it on other cars and always had to do this.

Disk Brake Pads

Changed my '95 V6-SE brake pads last week.
Used the NAPA metallic cheap things.
The caliper just swings up on one EZ bolt.

Carefull with the retainers AND lub the brake piston B4 you push it back in.
Yea, .... the brake fluid cup overflowed all over the place.

Caliper does not fit over new pads

I am having the same problem on my 1997 Nissan Pickup. I replaced the rotor, re-greased the bearings, and popped the new pads in but the caliper does not fit over them very well. I got Wagner pads. The inside pad fits okay so I know the piston is in enough. The outside pad is pressed up against the rotor when I force the caliper all the way closed to the point that I can drive but can bearly spin it by hand.

I think my next step is to try to return the pads and get new ones. Any ideas?
