Blown Engine...

1784 Views 12 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  sentra97gxe
I just wanted to get some feedback on the best ideas for this situation. My 1.6 in my 94 Sentra XE cracked the block (aka new engine.) 1st cylinder locked up and cracked the block just above the oil pan. It had 183k miles on it. I have connections to another 1.6 with 145k miles on it. I know that im gonna use that engine, but i have no idea of how well it was taken care of. I don't have the money for an all over rebuild, and i plan on replacing the timing chain before i drop it in mine. What are some other things I should do while i have it sitting on the workbench? Thanks in advance.

Remember you get what you pay for. There is always the option of ordering a JDM GA16DE motor from an importer which last time I checked was $475 plus shipping and they are already compression tested before sold and have low miles on them. Thats what I'm planning to do before summer. But I'm also doing the entire drive train including tranny, clutch, flywheel, and differential. Just ask yourself a question, "is the saved money on getting a used motor you know nothing about worth the risk of having to do this all over again in the near future?".

for real....u can tell the difference between usdm and jdm motors just by looking at them, but in the case of the link posted on ebay, u cant tell....u might be getting a full usdm motor...whats with the JDM motor craze anyway? do u guys even know what the differences are? i'll tell you....NOTHING besides egr equipment and higher compression(no, this doesnt mean more power  ) , the engine still puts out 115hp to the crank...whooptie doo. when it comes to transmissions however, there IS a difference....usdm ga trannies dont have lsd, some jdm's do..the jdm trannies also have different gearing ratios...
The reason I suggest a JDM motor is because they are low mileage and compression tested before sold. I wouldn't get one off ebay I'd go with an importer. If anyone needs to know of sites I can get some links. Yes I know the differents is minimal if at all but that ain't why I suggested it. Yeah a junk yard motor maybe cheap but can you trust it? Thats my point. You can get a rebuild usdm motor however from what I've seen they are much more expensive that getting a JDM motor. Once again, I don't suggest them because I thing they are faster or anything, only because they are comp. tested, low mileage, and at a reasonable price. Now back to the subject, pretty much check everything that has been listed and you should be good. Good luck
