There is a cable that runs from the shift mechanism to the ignition key called the Key Interlock Cable. It is the cable that engages the lock that keeps the key from turning unless tha car is in park or neutral. Perhaps it is this cable that is misaligned and causing your problem. The cable can be adjusted.
