I have been looking for a toyota truck for a while with no luck really.
I keep seeing some Nissan pickups around though and per $ in my area you are getting a newer, less miles, less rust.. and just overall a nicer condition truck for the money in a Nissan.

I am not familiar though with the Nissan trucks and would like some advice on them.

I am looking at 1995 reg cab, 4x4 with the 2.4L, manual shift.
no rust, very nice condition for its age. 175000 miles on it.

Is the 2.4L a good solid engine like the Toyota 22RE is?
I see it makes about 20 more hp with a loss of about 1mpg according to the EPA estimates.

Would just like to make sure it is a good engine with no major issues like Toyota's 3.0 of those years.
Any other tips or thiings i should look for on it when i go see it in person tommorrow would be great.

great motor. will to go 300k if taken care of.

in my 4x2 i got 24-26 in town

have not tested in my 93 4x4 yet...

but i will be mad if i don't net around 18 in town...

only downfall is aftermarket if you are wanting a bad *** rig.

i love my nissan and will soon be getting a tat of the nissan sym..

love them that much...can't go wrong

Good to know on the motor. Its used so you never know for sure how it was taken care of i guess.

This will just be a commuter mainly and haul and ATV somtimes. No mods at all most likely so the lack of aftermarket shouldn't matter to me to much.

My 1990 Kingcab 2.4L just rolled over to 226K, still runs like new. Best of all, I get around 26MPG when I avoid the E10 that most fuel stations now sell as "Gas".....

sounds like its a sturdy motor.

Thats a 2WD i assume?

Looks like 20mpg will be best case for a 4x4 from what i can see.

Yeah, it's a 2WD truck.
The only real issue the KA24E had was the timing chain guide from 89-93, made from plastic it had habit of breaking. Nissan redesigned the guide with metal, and all replacements are now the newer design.

My buddy refers to Nissan trucks as being like a sore peter, unbeatable. The guys on top gear, a UK car show, used a Nissan truck to float the english channel. They called it an unsinkable truck......

How often is the timing chain suppose to be replaced on these engines?

The timing chain guide issue was resolved by the time the 94 models hit the states. Since the truck you are looking at is a 95, it shouldn't have any issues in that dept.
The timing chain itself isn't prone to failure. Just that plastic guide. The plastic guide was not used after 1993.
One telltale sign of timing chain guide failure is a loud rattle occuring at startup, that lasts from 1-10 seconds, then disappears.

But Nissan doesn't give a mileage # of when the chain is worn out and needs to be replaced? I guess what i'm saying is at 175000 miles is that somthing i need to have done to it, or is the chain somthing that lasts the life span of the engine.

I guess i'm just used to seeing the timing chain posts on toyota forums. I don't remember the mileage interval on them though.

The guide being updated before this trucks year is nice to know.
Stuff like that is why i post asking questions on these boards!

they are great trucks, the 4wd will get around 16-19 mpg in the city, the 4 cyl in the 4wd is said to be under powered, but its a 4wd and not meant to do 10 sec 1/4 miles. I have no complaints on mine. I have had it for 4 yrs and bought it with 82,000 on it. with almost a 110,000 besides maintenance is a TPS sensor went bad. I do a lot of hard wheeling with it and love it. I did have a 89 toy xcab 4wd back in the day and the nissan would take on the same obstacles with no problems.

only downside is less availability of aftermarket parts than the toyotas. but they are out there.
