So long story short, My 97 Hardbody was running fine but had a check engine light on. It turned out to be my Throttle Position Sensor. So i bought a new tps and went to replace it, my friend threw out the factory part, and now the new part does not seem to work. The truck will start but seems to have no idea where the throttle is at. If you give the truck gas the engine starts doing this "wha wha wha wha"(sorry for the bad description) noise and there is thick black soot and stuff that comes out the back that is thick enought to coat my driveway. I think it is running rich but do not know how to fix it and that damn book doesn't say one word about the sensor. Thanks for any help or advice given

Not sure about a 1997, but on mine (a 1994) the TPS is mounted by two screws that are in slots. The slots let you rotate the TPS left/right as an adjustment. Check and see if it's adjusted properly.
