Try using another key if you have one. With both the NATS and NVIS security systems, I believe Nissan cuts off the fuel supply if the key doesn't have the correct code in it. It'll turn over fine, just won't spark.

I'm not familiar with the 96 pathfinder, but if there is a security light somewhere, watch it when you try and turn it over. With my '03, the light would turn solid when it couldn't read my key properly.

R50's don't have the chipped keys, they're just regular ones.

BTW, "cranking" and "turning over" are basically the same thing. You mean to say that it will crank but not run, eh?

KISS: check for air, fuel and for spark. Check ECU error codes. Check the oil? ;)
