I'm new to fixing cars and have a 93 sentra xe, and I'm trying to get it running reliably again. It idles fairly smooth in neutral or park, but in gear it starts running rough and sometimes almost stalls. Everything I've found refers to rough idle when not in gear. I'd appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction!

One of the first things to do is perform an ECU code readout Post the actual codes here on the forum so that we may be able to help you further. If there is one or more fault codes set, they can help point to the malfunction. If you have a copy of the FSM for your vehicle, the code readout procedure is described there along with a listing of codes. You can download a copy of the FSM from this web site: http://www.aubreyandcharles.com/ServiceManuals/ or https://diyservicemanuals.com/. The section EC.PDF is the one you need to read.

The common causes for rough idle are:
  • Dirty spark plugs
  • Intake system vacuum leak
  • Dirty fuel injectors
  • EGR valve
  • Ignition coil

Could also be a faulty or dirty IACV-AAC valve..which is not uncommon on these engines.
