Just bought the car for a grand for better gas mileage... 2 months into it I think the tranny went bye bye, and looking for you all to maybe help me confirm/deny. Car has been running beautifully on it's new 90,000 mile engine... shifting into second gear one day it felt like someone smacked the clutch back at me with a hammer. Next thing that happens; reverse is immpossible to stay in. it sort of engages, car eeeks backward and then zzzzzzzzz it's out. All forward gears work, but in 1st and 2nd I feel resistance and hear a whining/grinding noise that mirrors the rpms of the engine (if that makes sense)... Net net - one mechanic that hear this description was pretty sure the tranny is a goner and they only rip and replace. My hope is it;s the clutch, but either way I no longer am capable to fix my own cars.

Any advice out there for me?

Also I have this oil leak that drips onto the belts and sprays oil all over the passenger side of the motor... is it popssible that it's just the head gasket?

Hope you're willing to give me some advice before I am forced to more than double my 'money saving investment'

Oil leak is a $8 seal on the front crankshaft. There is a sticky with instructions to fix this, very common.
After that check the valve cover gasket.

Your shifting problem.
First check all the engine and transmission mounts, this sounds more like a linkage problem caused by a bad engine / trans mount

Dont understand your clutch problem.
check the adjustment and how does it work when stationary?

Good Luck.....

Spent more time with the Sentra this weekend. I can get it into reverse with some effort (not sure why it didn't go in last week), and the rest of the stuff I descrbed is pretty much the same. I am wondering if it isn't the clutch is somehow faulty on it, not the tranny?

The new info I have is that when the car is in nuetral and I let the clutch out I hear this light grinding noise. Also if I let the clutch out in any gear and get the car rolling forward or back (especially backward), then push the clutch in... there's a ton of resistance in the momentum and it quickly stops. In reverse it acually lurches to a stop with the clutch in and rolling... any new insights to offer?

I plan to take it in to get repaired soon, just perplexed at this point still.

If the symptoms are varying thats also a sign its the engine /trans mounts.
Please check these before you burn through a load of money.
