Hi All,

87 Sentra fails smog. HC CO gross polluter NOX okay though. So I take it to a smog specialist and find out that the AF mixture solenoid is not working at all. Puter sends signal but valve refuses to move. Now heres the kicker, they estimate that to put in a rebuilt carb and adjust it would be about a grand. Ive read on these forums that the carb is tricky to rebuild and adjust but a thousand dollars is not worth the effort. So I start to read the FSM and there is a section which spells out how to change the AFR mixture solenoid. It appears one does not have to rebuild the entire carb to change that one part. Am I not correct in that assumption. I appreciate any responses and suggestions. TIA

I would think that the problem is getting the solenoid, if you can get one then give it a try.....
Also you could take it off and clean it, check what wrong, a lead may have come off you can just re-crimp, who knows....

Thanks for the reply IanH, the solenoid resides on the underside of the choke chamber so you have to seperate the choke chamber from the center body to get to the solenoid. I already ordered a new one even though I have read they dont go bad that often.

Took carb off, took choke chamber off, replaced AF solenoid and reassembled.
Passed smog and saved 800.00 dollars. One could possibly change the AF solenoid with the carb still on the car but there are some small parts that can get lost if one is not careful.
