You might be going down the road and it will quit running but you can usually start it up before rolling to a stop.
Sometimes you start it and it will sputter and surge, won't idle, can only keep it sort of going above 1800 rpm. Lots of fuel rich black smoke.
Then sometimes you start it and it is zoom zoom all kinds of fun. Although sometimes you won't have full throttle.

Corrective action taken
New electric fuel pump. 2.0 fuel injected, normally aspirated.
new fuel filter.
Knocked the guts out of catalytic converter, it was melted in the middle.

Suspicions:
When checking the ignition module in distributer all of the electrical checks listed in the Chilton's book read correct except for the last one to grd.

Possibly the fuel regulator, but why would it be intermittant.

I have heard of ignition modules doing funny things.

Sounds like a bad o2 sensor or possibly a bad MAF sensor. My 200sx had a crapped out o2 sensor and it had a lot of carbon smoke that smelled of gas and poor driveability. I would check both of those. Oh yeah, your catalytic converter probably died because of the rich condition. They overheat and melt of too much fuel is coming out of your exhaust.
