I have an automatic in my '93 XE with over 211,000 miles. It works flawlessly, but i want to do a manual swap because I want to recoup MPGs and performance.
What years came with the 4 speed and do they deliver better MPGs than the 5 speed? I know the question sounds counterintuitive, but a 4 speed can deliver better mileage than a 5 (like the first gen Tercels did, as an example) due to a higher 4th gear, at the sacrifice of performance.

you can use 91-99 4 or 5 speed from the ga16de and the 5 speed will give you better mpg

I"m getting 33mpg average with most of my driving being highway (80% to 90%) with a 5 spd but I probably need a tune-up.

What are you getting with the auto?

The first four ratios are the same for both the 4 speed and 5 speed, with the fifth gear being higher. So the 5 speed should give you much better fuel mileage.

Find a Car

also shows that the 5 speed gets better mileage than the 4 speed on the highway (same in town with the same gear ratios 1-4) for the 91 Sentra.

I'm getting a fairly consistent 35 MPG, but I have to tell you I drive like an old man; not slowly per se, but I'm easy with the acceleration and I anticipate when to brake.

Centurion,

Did you ever do the swap? Which trans did you end up with?

just changing the transmission will make it a 5-speed. straight swap.
