Hi Folks,

I had my 5sp manual transmission take a dive and am going to have it rebuilt. My car is a 98 200sx-ser ..... the transmission was swapped out for a 96 before I purchased the car..... since the 96 has the LSD.

1) Is there anything than can be done to the 96' tranny during the rebuild process to beef it up at a reasonable cost.

2) Is there a higher 5th gear available ..... so that cruising at 65 mph is done at a lower RPM...

Current modificatons to increase power: cold air induction, lighter flywheel, header, full 2 1/4" exhaust... I hope to eventually get to 200fl/lb torque, 225-250 hp..... and would like to rebuilt the tranny for that now while I got it out of the car.... Any info would be appreciated.... Thanx

There are two things which strengthen the trans:

Cryo treating the gears (especially 3-rd)

Welding the case

A more expensive option is a PAR gearset which is almost bulletproof.

I already knew about the Cryo treatment, welding the case and the $3000 PAR gearset ....... from the archives that I found. I was wondering if there was anything else..... say.... a rebuild kit from a place a little more local than Australia and somewhere around $1K or less for the parts....

In addition is there a 5th gear available with a higher ratio?? say maybe from the G20 or some other manufacturer that will fit the 96'.... just a thought....

There are 5 B15 transmissions:

Automatic
RE4F03B Final Drive: 3.827:1
Re4F04B Final Drive: 4.087

Manual
RS5F70A Final Drive: 4.176 5-th: 0.756
RS5F51A Final Drive: 4.133 5-th: 0.772
RS6F51H Final Drive: 4.428

I don't know if any of these are interchangable, but I would guess that the final drives are the most likely to be.
