Yes, definitely try and get the powertrain codes. If you can't get it to the parts store, you can get basic OBD II code readers for around $25-35. Some of the things I would look for is a bad crankshaft or camshaft position sensor, bad fuel pump or unmetered air getting into the engine through splits in the rubber intake ducts. I would spend money on any parts, however, until it's check for trouble codes.
